Q&A

Why did you choose the University of Michigan?

JK: I really trust and believe in all the coaches. We all have the same goals and we will all work as hard as we can to achieve them. I believe that my coaches will help me develop as a player and when my college career is over, I will be ready for the MLB draft. Not only is U of M a top-30 baseball program in the country, but it’s also the No. 3 public school in the country. It will give me my best opportunity to be successful in baseball and successful in life.

What is your favorite part about baseball?

JK: My favorite part is the mental battle between me and the batter. I love do- ing what the hitter won’t expect me to do. If I’m up 0-2 in the count and he expects an off-speed pitch, I’ll throw him a fastball up and in to let him know that he doesn’t know what’s coming. Or if I’m down 2-0 in the count and he expects a fastball, I’ll give him a curveball or slider and let him swing and miss. I enjoy keeping hitters off balance and making them very uncomfortable in the box.

What will you miss most about high school sports?

JK: I’ll miss playing with my best friends. In Algonac, everyone knows and cares for each other. I’ve grown up with these kids and have known my coaches since elementary school. Not only do I get to go to a practice or game every day playing the sport I love, but I get to do it with my best friends that I have known since kindergarten. I’ll also miss the support from the community. The best feeling was playing in the state quarterfinals last year and seeing hundreds of people in blue and gold sitting by our dugout cheering for us, and then coming home and seeing signs made for us throughout the school and the entire town. The support here is amazing and is something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
