Q&A

Why did you choose Eastern Illinois University?

DJ: EIU checked all of my boxes that I was looking for when finding a potential college. Being Division 1, the size of their campus, and the distance away from home were all exactly what I wanted. I really like the coaching staff and I fully believe they will develop me as a runner and push me to achieve my full potential. I will be able to compete as a freshman with a highly competitive and successful team.

What is your favorite part about track?

DJ: I had only been a part of team sports my entire life until I joined track. Being such an individual sport, the environment is completely different, but I enjoy that there are still times to compete as a team in relays. I respect the accountability I have to give myself when competing in my events. The only person I can blame is myself if my times are not where I would like them to be and it pushes me to train more and change the things I am doing wrong instead of relying on other people.

What will you miss most about high school sports?

DJ: I will miss competing with the people I have played with for most of my life and my hometown community cheering me on in the stands. I will also miss the coaches that have been coaching me for four years and that have put so much time into me. Leaving my best friends and the team environment we have worked hard to create will be very difficult, but I know my underclassmen will step up and keep it going.
