Boys tennis regional tournament to begin today
The 2022 MHSAA Regional Finals are set to take place today and tomorrow as local teams will look to qualify for the State Finals. In order to do so, they will have to place in the top two or tally a team total of at least 18 points.
Any No. 1 singles player who finishes first or second in the flight and is not on a qualifying team will also earn the right to play at next week’s State Finals scheduled for Oct. 13-15.
Wednesday, Oct. 5 – Division 4, Region 28 hosted by Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett

Despite competing against the state powerhouse host school, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, at 12-0 on the season, the Armada Tigers are another regional favorite. Almont, Marine City, and Sandusky each have a deep history of State Finals appearances as well and will look to continue the trend.

St. Clair’s senior-led team is on a mission to keep the streak alive. Five members on this year’s roster have competed in the last three State Finals and they’re not ready to go home yet. This week’s championship will be a test of their preparation through their tough MAC-Red schedule.

This regional serves somewhat as a MAC crossover tournament as several of the top teams in the league will fight to keep their seasons alive.

The Port Huron Northern Huskies finished their season third in the MAC-White and will see several division rivals again this week. Utica finished second in the division and Dakota was fifth. L’Anse Creuse North was the MAC-Blue champion and Eisenhower was the co-champion of the MAC-Red.
Northern’s No. 1 singles player, senior Charley Dunkel, was the regional runner-up last season and will look to return to the State Finals. During the regular season he defeated five of the regional opponents he could see this week.
